Sony HDW-F900/3 CineAlta
The Sony HDW-F900/3 CineAlta is the digital camera system of choice for the Ocean Futures
Society film expedition team. It has many technological innovations that enable the
creation of versatile and outstanding underwater visual images.
Cinema-Quality Digital Recording
The HDW-F900/3 camcorder offers high definition image-capture equivalent to the picture
quality associated with 24-frame 35 mm film. The 24-frame progressive capability of HDCAM
converges digital and film imaging, offering our camera operators a new and novel creative
flexibility for documentary television film production. A high degree of production
security is assured by the immediacy of the medium and the comfort of instant HD review of
the material on location (direct playback from a camcorder or VTR). Improved production
speed and cost-effectiveness is the result of a subsequent direct entry to digital
postproduction. There are no costs for film processing and telecine transfer and an
absence of the associated time delays. The substantially lower cost of raw stock is a
significant factor in enhancing production cash flow by substantially lowering up-front
production costs. And the digital tape can always be reused if desired.
This camera produces a more cinematic or film-like look with the use of appropriate
camera settings, operational accessories and lenses, and of course, the added craftsmanship
of the cinematographer. The creative versatility of this camcorder, together with
cinematic-style shooting, lighting and appropriate grading in postproduction promises very
rewarding results for the OFS team. Program material produced under these conditions
closely matches the performance of 35 mm film origination that is processed in the
traditional manner and projected in cinemas.

AMPHIBICAM® - Broadcast Video Housing
The Ocean Futures Society film expedition team uses the AMPHIBICAM® Broadcast
Video Housing, specifically for the Sony® HDW-F900/3 High Definition
camcorder. This housing is rated to operate to a depth of 100 metres (or 330 feet) but
provides ideal protection in any environment the team encounters. All optical and lighting
accessories as well as all electronics are compatible with topside operation.
The AMPHIBICAM® Broadcast Video Housing has some of the most
technologically innovative features ever conceived in the videography industry, providing
our camera operators with the very best equipment for video film production. Aspheric and
Binary technology has been incorporated in the lens system, delivering wide angle,
zoom-through, zero distortion imaging and assembled from a combination of glass and a
special plastic that absorbs no moisture. These same technologically advanced features have
been designed into the high-resolution electronic viewfinder as well, providing optically
enhanced images from oblique angles of view. The electronics are the most sophisticated
ever developed for underwater video, providing 16 camera and lens fingertip controls.
The AMPHIBICAM® weighs 52 lbs. topside without the camera and 72 lbs.
with the camera. It is buoyancy neutral in seawater with 2 lbs. of lead ballast.
