Voyage to Kure - Funding

Ocean Futures Society would like to thank the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation for its generous support toward funding the PBS television documentary, Voyage to Kure

About the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation

Harold K. L. Castle founded the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation in 1962. Mr. Castle was the owner of Kaneohe Ranch and the land it occupied. He and his wife, Alice Hedemann Castle, were significant figures in the development of modern Hawaii.

Upon his death in 1967, Mr. Castle bequeathed a portion of his real estate assets to the Foundation. These assets are the base from which the Foundation's grants are made. Harold Castle's son, James C. Castle, was a director of the Foundation since its inception, and succeeded Harold Castle as president in 1968. He held this position until his death in 1994. In 1994, Harold Castle's grandson, James C. McIntosh, was elected President. Directors John C. Baldwin and James C. McIntosh are grandsons of Harold and Alice Castle. In 1994, H. Mitchell D'Olier and William E. Aull joined the Board of Directors. In 2002, Mr. McIntosh was elected Chairman of the Board and Mr. D'Olier was elected to the new position of President and C.E.O.

The Foundation is the largest private foundation based in Hawaii. Each year the Directors award grants to non-profit organizations benefiting the people of the State of Hawaii. Originally, the grants focused on the Windward side of Oahu, youth, private education, and health care. However, the broad purpose of the Foundation allows response to any current community concern. From 1992 through 2002 alone, over $65,000,000 was granted to organizations serving Hawaii, with over $20,000,000 going to organizations serving Windward Oahu. Currently, the Foundation averages grant awards of $8,000,000 a year.
