In Tribute to Columbia's Astronauts
A central element of the official NASA patch design for NASA STS-107 is centered on the breadth of science conducted on this mission. It will have widespread benefits to life on Earth and our continued exploration of space, as illustrated by the Earth and stars. The constellation Columba (the dove) was chosen to symbolize peace on Earth and the Space Shuttle Columbia. The seven stars also represent the mission crewmembers and honor the original astronauts who paved the way to make research in space possible. The Israeli flag is adjacent to the name of the payload specialist who is the first person from that country to fly on the Space Shuttle.  Image Courtesy of NASA

The Ocean Futures Society team and I are deeply saddened by the loss of the Columbia and her crew. Over the years, we have worked closely with NASA on various projects and events, and their spirit and drive to explore our oceans and space is at the very core of human nature. I have long supported the need to study our planet’s oceans from space in order to better understand and protect them. The astronauts who lost their lives are part of the incomparable team and family at NASA and represent the best and brightest of us all. We grieve for their families, honor the boldness of their spirit, and are inspired by their sacrifice.

For their dedication to the truest spirit of exploration and the quest for knowledge, the astronauts of Columbia will not be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the dedicated people at NASA and the families and friends of our fallen heroes. As we look across our vast oceans, their memory will inspire us to be bold, to be brave and to continue to seek knowledge for all humankind.
