Jean-Michel Cousteau's statement on release of captive whales
The video and photo images that are circulating from Thursday’s release of 2 orcas and 6 belugas raise serious questions about the welfare of the orcas and beluga whales who are being returned to the ocean in Far Eastern Russia.
I ask that the recommendations we have submitted to Russian authorities be incorporated into the rehabilitation and release of the remaining 8 orcas and 81 belugas - especially that international experts are included in the remaining releases, and that there be full transparency of all that occurs.
It is very important that the whales receive rehabilitation after their long journey back to where they were captured and before they are returned to the ocean. In this way, people throughout the world will be able to join Russian authorities and scientists in rejoicing for the release of these whales.
Protect The Ocean And You Protect Yourself.
Warm Regards,
